As I look through photos on my phone, I decided to do a little blog post.

Last Monday I started some seeds in the AeroGarden I picked up at Sam's Club for 1/2 price. I've been fascinated by them, but could never justify the cost. The bundle at Sam's included, in addition to the six herb starter "plugs", a DIY seed starting insert. I received an order from Johnny's Seeds in Maine a few days beforehand so here we go! San Marzano tomatoes, Wisconsin 55 tomatoes, Artichokes (!), and two types of basil. After only a week, they're really growing! So exciting.

AeroGarden

I decided to try orchid growing again. Making and baking French bread was also part of the class, but I bake bread pretty often. This was a quick and easy recipe though.

There were seven of us in the class in the charming little town of New Harmony. My only disappointment in the day was when I found out that my favorite shopping destination in New Harmony is now closed on Sundays. I had been looking forward to shopping there after the cooking class, but it was not to be.

I cannot believe that I made fresh mozzarella! As soon as I got home, I located the ingredients I need to make more cheese. Nothing too drastic...citric acid (which I've used before), rennet, and "cheese salt." Just so I would get free shipping, I added a mascarpone cheese kit. Who doesn't love mascarpone? Tiramisu and other wonderful things, here I come!

The class ran longer than I thought it would...10AM-1:30, but I learned lots of stuff. Cold and gloomy. The only relief is sight is reading...I really should have picked a sunny tropical beach read for myself, and of course there is stil time to do that. In the meantime, here's what we're reading:

This one is for Vivian to add to her collection of strong female characters. One of my favorites just came out in a Little Golden Book...Frida Kahlo. Beautiful colors and a highly condensed and sanitized version of Frida's life. Definitely a good read though!

Yesterday's mail yielded a couple of things for me...In Her Studio, a magazine that makes one want to have a studio, but it is just more satisfying to look at other people's art spaces. Looking without doing or having the mess to clean up. The second item is Julia Cameron's (The Artist's Way author) newest book, The Listening Path. Other reads for the weekend...a plethora of mystery/thrillers loaded on my Kindle.

Even though for lots of people this is a three-day weekend. Not for me, because alas, I'm the Saturday Librarian, counting down the hours until I can go home!
Teresahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07265040074135227114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5101538826841529604.post-15820281854507968982021-01-11T13:11:00.006-06:002021-01-11T13:11:55.988-06:00The Weekend...

I cannot remember the last week that I worked five days in a row...full days, mind you! It was rough. Really rough. Cold, darkness, and gloom in addition to the awful antics in Washington DC. I can't believe we've sunk this low.

Friday finally arrived, and when I got home the entire fireplace insert/surround had been removed and the bricks were cleaned. Megan pulled all out and we tried to decide what to put in the big opening since the gas logs are gone (yay!!). I brought down the Buddha from upstairs, and we filled the space with electric candles, Buddha, a start of a painting (as a background), and bamboo plants. Different, but very serene. A good spot to look at and think, or not think.

Saturday and Sunday flew by, as usual. I didn't leave the house. I did watch too much CNN and MSNBC, but finally switched over to Hulu to catch up on soaps, and Sundance for the first episode of the second season of Discovery of Witches. And then Monday morning arrived...
Teresahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07265040074135227114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5101538826841529604.post-10991110894505465252021-01-04T16:58:00.001-06:002021-01-04T16:58:14.738-06:00January 4

Seems like there are lots of Frida Kahlo "things" out there. Books, dolls, and now quote cards. I love all things Frida. Strong, courageous, witty...too bad Diego was such a dick.

After an another weekend of WTAF "news", it's good to get back to work, and hopefully one day soon I'll actually know what day it is. One super good thing about work since mid-March is that music can flow...Spotify every day. It will be missed when we open back up to the public.

Things at home are popping. Megan is on a home repair/home dec kick. She has become really good at doing home upgrades. We got a barn door slide ready to hang between a cold enclosed sunporch and the house...no door was there, and it gets a bit drafty. I love the look of barn doors, and I'm hoping this takes care of the drafts.
Teresahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07265040074135227114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5101538826841529604.post-85299126560136507342021-01-02T10:40:00.003-06:002021-01-02T10:40:31.550-06:00January 1-2

Here's a New Year's photo of the kitchen windowsill. Basil growing in water from last summer's crop. This is kind of my favorite way to "preserve" basil. So easy, smells great, and looks beautiful! I just snip stems of basil from the plants growing outside (in summer), and put them in water to root. If you change out the water every so often, and keep the water topped up in the container, the basil continues to grow...even as you snip cuttings from the tips. Great to have on hand to add freshness to salads and pizza!

Sure looks gloomy out that window! I need a day of pure sunshine to brighten things up.
Teresahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07265040074135227114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5101538826841529604.post-31739318975898860362020-12-29T17:04:00.004-06:002020-12-29T17:04:50.505-06:00End of the year, part 2

"Watercooler" talk today...Bridgerton. I would never knowingly in my ancient age, pick up a paperback romance. Watching it is entirely a different thing! Beautiful costumes, music, gardens, etc. Not to mention the eye-candy of the Duke. I generally love anything from Shonda Rhimes, and this was just so good! Eight episodes to watch during a gloomy, cold day. I mentioned it to my two part time staffers today, one had watched it, the other will be jumping on the bandwagon when she gets home from work. This week finds me preparing for one of January's book discussions via Facebook for the library. It is This Side of Paradise by one of my very favorite authors, F. Scott Fitzgerald. The book takes place beginning in 1920...think of the 1918 Pandemic, prohibition, smoky jazz clubs...I hope the discussion is lively.

One more day of work until a two day holiday, then back to work on Saturday (boo). I've been trying to squeeze in vacation hours which must be taken or lost by the end of the year. It's been unfortunate that my one full time staffer has lots of vacation to use during this time too. We've been using half days, and the occasional full day, and it has resulted in not working together for the past two weeks. We're both working today, so it has been "catch-up" time with plenty of conversation. It was kind of hard to motivate myself to come into work this morning...way too cold out! I supposed retirement can't come too soon, but I still hope to hold out until the end of May. Then I will transition into watching Vivian while school is out. Here's hoping we can have adventures this summer!

On the agenda for next week...organizing for the new year. Here's hoping that 2021 will actually have something to plan for, other than retirement at the end of May!

Peg & Awl Sendak Artists Roll

I've admired this product for a few years. What a crazy year. I rarely know what day it is OR what month it is. I'm trying to burn vacation days...a half day here and there, and those fabulous whole days scattered around the weekend. When we came back to work in mid-May, there was really no place to go or things to do, so it didn't even occur to me to take a vacation. Now it is use it or lose it time...we can only carry over 80 hours of vacation into next year.

So...what have I been up to? Not much. Still prepping for retirement...in this case purchasing things I want/need before I cut the employment cord. Lots of painting and art supplies, Alabama Chanin School of Making kits, embroidery projects from Dropcloth designs, punch needle and rug hooking supplies, fabric...lots of fabric. I have serious intentions to make quilts, something I haven't pursued in years.

All Christmas presents are purchased and wrapped, so I'm ready for our tiny family holiday. We Thanksgiving-ed in our little pod. I'm glad that Megan takes all of this COVID stuff so seriously. I'd rather isolate now so we can be around in the future.

The house is having a good Christmas so far...new carpeting, another robot vacuum, and regular maintenance upgrades. The garden has been "put to bed"...just last Saturday...just in time for our first snow of the season yesterday. I'm hoping for a quiet, productive winter.

Aldi Wine Advent Calendar

Teresahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07265040074135227114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5101538826841529604.post-37232762240670790532020-04-01T14:25:00.001-05:002020-04-01T14:25:52.158-05:00Alone:Together

Well, we're halfway through week three of being home-bound. Having sunny skies makes it better, right"

I went "elderly" grocery shopping early yesterday morning, and picked up all that we should need for the next week or so. Should have gotten more than one four-pack of blueberry muffins, because they seem to be Vivi's favorite. Maybe next week. I'm always pretty happy to have beverages stocked...Starbucks K-cups, Coke Zero, and tea. I've accumulated so many kinds of teas this past year...so many that we probably won't need to order/buy any for the next few years.

After the grocery, on the way home I was driving past Lowe's. It was early, and no one was there in the garden center except for the cashier. I got an herb planter filled with rosemary, oregano, and thyme. In addition, I picked up a nice tomato plant and a few packages of seeds. Early tomorrow morning, I hope to make it out to Rural King (just 2 miles away) and pick up a 6' x 2" x 1" galvanized planter (water trough) to place out on the deck. It's time to start the garden...and even though there is plenty of space to dig out a garden in the back yard, it's just too much work...and it's too far away from a water source. I do not want to be carrying buckets of water down the hill. Lazy? For sure.It will be nice to have our little trough of crops right outside the sliding doors. Easy to take care of, and nice to look at.

The Flora Kahlo rose bushes I planted two years ago are finally starting to sprout some leaves. I swear, they've looked like dead sticks for the past year. I was considering pulling them out, but I'm so glad that I didn't.

One full week of my library science class is out of the way. Seven more to go. Considering the amount of projects and papers that are required, I'm kind of glad I'm not working. SO GLAD this is my last class for certification!
I don't know where this image came from, but I "lifted" it from a local jewelry designers Facebook posts...Dharma Cowgirl. She always posts the most amazing images!

What I am working on...

A "Nightshift" shawl with the KnitAlong started by Vicki "Knitorious"
An A-line dress kit received just in time from Alabama Chanin's School of Making
Old WIPS...and there are oh so many!
Organizing my bedroom...also always a WIP
Cooking...the pantry is pretty well stocked, and I'm trying to keep things interesting

What I'm bingeing on streaming services:

The Newsroom on Amazon Prime
Burden of Truth (as opposed to Burden of Proof) on Hulu
3 bites of Little Fires Everywhere on Hulu...I also enjoyed the book

What I recommend, if you have the CBS app...The Good Fight. I loved The Good Wife, and looked forward to Sunday evening to watch the new episodes. The Good Fight is Good Wife on steroids. So good, and I look forward to the next season dropping.
Stay safe...be well...wash your hands!
After being sunshine-starved, our little family headed to the sunny skies of Key West for a week-long vacation. This was Vivi's second airplane adventure, but the first one happened when she was just six months old, so it was not really memorable. This one, however...

Life is good. No bumps in the road, not job stresses, and most important of all, no classes to take until Spring semester. The most pressing issue I have right now is a Target run on my lunch hour today. They have the best thin crust pizzas...Archer Farms - Mushroom and truffle oil on a super thin crust. Believe me, it's divine! Friday night is pizza night at our house, so Target is a must today! I absolutely hate the idea of shopping anywhere on a Friday after work, so lunch hour, it is!

I haven't been up to much lately...just schoolwork, work-work, and hanging out at home with Megan and Vivian. Our summer Netflix watchlist has consisted mostly of watching the entire however many seasons of Grey's Anatomy, with a little Scandal thrown in on the side. "Crafting" has fallen by the wayside, but I'm ready to start knitting again. I get the knit bug every autumn, and it fades into obscurity around February. One of our library locations is having a class on a "Surprise Jacket" for children, and it looks fairly quick and easy.
Megan, Vivian and I went to YART a few Saturdays ago. YART---a yard sale for art. All pieces are moderately priced, and all are represented and sold by the actual artists. It's always a fun time, and the weather was perfect this year. Vivian enjoyed herself, wandering among the artsy booths.
She's kind of a hipster, right? She loves choosing her own clothing, and nine times out of ten will prefer to be dressed almost like her mother. Lots of black leggings and t shirts! She started pre-school a few weeks ago and just loves it. It's great for her to be around other kids...she's learning lots from both the teachers and the kids.

I love living with Megan and Vivian. Snow...a real snow. The amazing thing? It was forecasted to arrive at 4 PM and it did. That never happens! According to the roof of my car, we got about 4 inches (also forecasted!!). The best part about it though, was that the roads were cleared early this morning and there were absolutely no problems getting to work. The hardest part was getting the snow off of the center of the top of the car! It was absolutely "mohawkish" for a bit.

It's unfortunate that work was unaffected by the snow...we were all hoping for a snow day today, especially since Saturdays are a bit slow anyway.Teresahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07265040074135227114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5101538826841529604.post-59485184833798761512018-12-21T15:48:00.002-06:002018-12-21T15:48:52.067-06:00Finally found the chairs...I've been looking for a couple of chairs for my room since Spring. Found the inspiration picture on Frenchtown Station's Facebook page. A friend and I visited there a few months ago and the chairs weren't there...things come and go rather quickly in this super-cute little shop. Anyway, I found the chairs elsewhere, and also a copycat of the ottoman.
I love the spare look of the leather butterfly chairs. While they aren't the chairs I imagined last Spring--I was more in the market for a huge comfortable reading chair--the chairs paired with the slouchy leather ottoman will be perfect and the set won't take up as much space. I found the chairs locally (and on Amazon) for not a lot of money, and the ottoman is available on Amazon. Can't wait...my first big purchase of 2019, coming up!

We totally skipped autumn here. We went from blazing hot summer directly into winter, or maybe I should say cold, gloomy weather. The first snow/freezing rain event happened yesterday on November 14. Way too early! The ground is covered this morning, and the road in front of the house looks slick--and it is a curvy, hilly road.
Here's a view from "the penthouse", through the blind slats. I'm off work through next Tuesday...combination of birthday holiday and a floating holiday for Thanksgiving next week. My only thing to look forward to, in regard to leaving the house, is an adventure with my friend Carol. We're finally going to go to Ferdinand's Christkindlmarkt on Saturday. We've been talking about going for years!Teresahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07265040074135227114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5101538826841529604.post-54917567070158256012018-11-05T09:11:00.001-06:002018-11-05T09:11:42.994-06:00...as if you're life depended on it.I wish that I didn't have an interest in politics. I wish that I didn't wake up in the middle of a somewhat restless sleep and think about the way the world is turning. But I do. I care about what is happening here and there...those people "the caravan" will be at our border at Thanksgiving. Greeting them with armed forces isn't very welcoming, is it? If we were in a terrifying situation and needed to leave, wouldn't it be nice to think that we have a safe place to go? Put it in perspective...if you were a battered woman and you needed to get out of that situation (maybe along with your child(ren)), wouldn't you want a safe space? Thank goodness we at least recognize that problem here in Evansville. We don't need to be caretakers for the world, but we do need to show compassion, and not vitriol. Vote tomorrow...because your life does depend on it.
New experiences, new outlook, and hopefully, "new" weather...crispy, perhaps!

I'm on week three of an online library class. I need it to keep my librarian certification, since I don't have an MLS (I have a Masters in Public Service Administration). This online class seems to have a lot of moving parts...lots to keep track of. I think that I'd perfer an "in person" class, but it is cost prohibitive. As it is, I pay for this class (and the four others I need to take) even though it is a requirement of my job. What's the fun in that?
Art journaling. I love the idea of it, get all of the "stuff" for it--and by that, I mean drag out all of my art supplies--and then I end up staring at a blank journal page. Draw Your Day is a wonderful "you can do it!!" book. Beautiful illustrations, and just enough push to get you started.
Now that I will be moving into a house with an actual yard, I've been thinking about gardening. Mostly vegetable gardening, but then I came across this beautiful rose, so now all I can think about is flower gardening.

I can't wait to get moved...my daughter and her family have started the move, but the previous owners of the house left some heavy unusable furniture in my space. I have until the end of the month to vacate my apartment, but since I'm off for four days beginning this Thursday, I want to get EVERYTHING ready to go!

Then...I want to start ordering some plants...herbs, flowers, all of that stuff! We have window boxes to fill and lots of space for all kinds of gardens. Can't wait!Teresahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07265040074135227114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5101538826841529604.post-58447984968138198352018-01-17T15:19:00.000-06:002018-01-17T15:19:52.024-06:00The only good thing about snow...

The temperature last Thursday was 64 degrees. Rainy, but still...64 degrees in mid-January. I'll take it, right? Around midnight, the rain changed to freezing rain and sleet. It then turned to snow sometime after daylight. Fortunately, I pulled my windshield wipers away from the window and tucked them into little plastic bags, just like they featured on Good Morning, America Thursday morning. Also fortunately, I had a full pantry and refrigerator. Around 8 PM Thursday evening I was notified by group text that the libraries would be closed on Friday...Yay!! I immediately sent out a text to the employees at my little branch library. All were happy. After all, who wants to drive around in snow and ice? Friday evening was a repeat...the libraries were closed on Saturday. Our location is never open on Sunday, and Monday was a holiday. A four day weekend. The bad news...no one plowed the parking lot of the huge complex where I live. All told, we had nearly eight inches of snow over two days...then the temperature really dropped and we woke up to actual -2 degrees yesterday. Snow is messy...ice is messier. I finally dislodged my car from the parking place late yesterday afternoon, and managed to drive to work today without incident.

Since I was off, I played around with a few cocktail recipes...the one shown below is a Boulevardier, consisting of bourbon, Campari, and sweet vermouth. I saw the recipe on Smitten Kitchen's Instagram feed. Pretty good! A few of my other cocktail creations were a Dark & Stormy, a Negroni, and some plain old red wine. It's been ages since I've had alcohol, and it was fun experimenting with new to me recipes.
I have all kinds of projects floating around in my head. For the most part, I even have the supplies already on hand. Now all I have to do is harness the brain waves and sit down and do something!

It has been super cold here for what seems like forever. I don't like getting up and going to work in 1 degree weather with wind chills in the sub-zero range. No fun! By the time I get home from work, it is dark (and still cold both inside the apartment and outside), so my usual routine is to go into the house, put my throw and/or quilt into the dryer to warm up, and jump into pjs. Therefore, not much gets done around the house, because I usually fall asleep early and don't ever get out from under the covers until it's time to shower and get ready for work. Not good habits to get into at all.

Maybe tonight will be the night...

So this is the start of a new year...no "new year, new you" or resolutions for me. I decided several years ago that I could/would not keep promises to myself, or that they were just too big in scope to handle. This year I just want to "be good"...be a good citizen, be a good neighbor, be a good supervisor, be a good mother and grandmother. That really shouldn't be hard...I always (almost anyway!!) try to do the right thing. It may sound silly, but I want to live my "dream" life this year...to come home to a relatively clean and uncluttered home and do whatever my heart desires...read, knit, whatever. Since I've severely down-sized, I'm fairly certain that I can make that happen without too much stress and strain.Teresahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07265040074135227114noreply@blogger.com0
